My mom always buys watermelon when she can and I read in Good Housekeeping magazine that to chill them is a no-no! Why? Watermelon decreases in antioxidant content (beta carotene and lycopene) when chilled, but when stored at room temperature, the high levels of antioxidants remain. And their levels of antioxidants are higher than melons!
